License to Reproduce?
Akeeyu and Susan have already covered this, but the more the merrier right?
Basically, Indiana wants me to get a permit to reproduce since I can't do it all by myself. You would have to meet the requirements set for a domestic infant adoption. Even for an IUI with your husband's sperm. Obviously this is beyond belief. I am sick and tired of people telling me what to do with my uterus. Unless they get involved in the care and maintainance of said uterus, they have no business telling me what to do with it.
Infertility is a MEDICAL problem. Why should we have to seek court approval treatment of a medical condition? Will I also have to get approved for treatment of my high blood pressure? What if I'm not married, will I have to suffer with hypertension? What if I'm not "good enough"? Infertility is demoralizing enough without having to prove you are good enough to be a parent just because your naughty bits don't work quite right.
And since one of the requirements is that the "intended parents" must be married to obtain this golden ticket of reproduction, this is obviously a thinly veiled anti-gay law. Because you know we can't have them thar gays having kids right? Bullshit. Unless of course they are planning on legalizing gay marriage. Wanna place bets on that one?
Anyway, if you would like to contact the author of this bill, Sen. Patricia Miller, her phone number is 317-232-9489 and her e-mail address is s32@in.gov. Even if you don't live in Indiana, once a precedent is set it will be easier for other states to follow suit. If I lived in Indiana I think I'd pay her a personal visit. So speak up and speak out. Angry infertile women are the wrong group to mess with.
*update
It's been brought to my attention that ART would be allowed as long as the two MARRIED parents use their own genetic material. My question is, does that make a difference?

In a government that seems more power-hungry (or inept, take your pick) by the day, this is a pretty scary story about encroaching fascism. I hope this gets voted down, or better yet, laughed out of Indiana’s capital building.
If not, hey, M... [Read More]

Okay, Jenn I have been following your story here since I first googled "paint red bathroom" way back when. Finally letting you know that I am here reading along. Anyway, I Do live in Indiana and this is the same awful woman that tried to tell me that I couldn't use a mid-wife to have my daughter at home! She is just downright EVIL. I wonder, is she even a woman? Is she a human being? She certainly does not believe that a woman's body is her own!

I'm sure that you've read this elsewhere by now (Julie at alittlepregnant wrote about this and then amended her post accordingly), but married couples using their own eggs and sperm would not have to go through this process. However, anyone using donor eggs or sperm would. And, of course, ART would not even be an option for unmarried people. Interesting that Indiana has a law on the books preventing gay marriage, huh?
Truly, it's horrifying.

That is regoddamndiculous. I've never heard anything so stupid in my life. I'm sorry that I'm not as fertile as a crack whore on welfare. It's too bad that Indiana prefers drug addicts to infertiles. I'm in Ohio, not a far cry from Indiana, so I'm glad you brough this to my attention. Man, I am FIRED UP!! I'll probably reference this in my blog, linking to your info on writing the nice Indiana Senator.

that is horrifying--I can't even think of anything else to say about it.
Well, ok, actually I can. I'm going to go draft a nasty email...

this is horrifying, how dare they argh it just makes me angry. Honest question here as I'm not in the USA and don't don't understand a lot of the stances made there, what is to stop gays from marrying a surrogate? there would be ways around it for them, for unwed hetro couples argh just getting angry again at the sheer stupidity of it all, stopping now.
