New job on the horizon

It is pretty much official now. My last day in the office here will be the 31st (Jan 1st is a holiday, and Jan 2nd is a Friday, so there is no real reason to come in then). And my first day on the new job will be Jan 12th.

Should be a nice little mini-vacation. Maybe I will even find some time to work on the Plugin Manager, or one of my many other mini-projects.

I'm back, mostly

Well, the move has gone relatively smoothly, with a couple exceptions. It would appear that the motherboard in my main machine went kaput, so I snagged a new one and finally got a chance to install it last night. In addition to that, my server machine was under a massive load once I got it back online this past weekend. And now that I've gotten my main machine back up I found out why: it would appear that somebody has been doing some serious spamming on AOL, using forged email from the rayners.org domain. I got somewhere in the neighborhood of 35,000 rejected emails coming back at me in the span of about three days. No wonder my server machine was running out of memory.

So, now that I've gotten that worked out somewhat, I can try and get back to responding to emails I've gotten over the last week or so (between the move, work, and school, I've been a little busy). So, I apologize if I haven't gotten back to you yet, but I am trying. It just may take me a few more days (seems IMAP doesn't want to delete or copy 35,000 (or even 15,000) messages at once, so it is going to take me a little while to clean things up).

Decisions, Decisions

Why must life be so difficult? :)

So, I've gotten a job offer for nearly 50% more than what I'm making now. I would definately like to work for this company, and the project that they would be hiring me for sounds pretty interesting.

Unfortunately, they are based in Annapolis (~45 miles from our new house, along some rather congested highways). The group I would be working for was looking into office space in Columbia (~20 miles from the new house, avoiding the worst of those congested highways). That move appears to have been put on the back burner, so if I were to take the offer, I'd be commuting to Annapolis every day, doubling the distance I travel and probably tripling the time it takes thanks to traffic (though if I get started early, that may improve a little).

I will probably still take the offer, but it certainly is not as nice as it was when I thought I would be commuting to Columbia. I suppose things could be much worse. :)

Update: (2003-11-03 11:33)

Okay, so I took the job. It was too good of an opportunity to pass up, even if it means a long commute (for this area of the country at least).

Job Hunting

Now that it is effectively public, I figured I would let everybody know that I am currently on the job prowl. I still have my current job, but I thought I would take a moment to see what else is out there. A lot has changed for me since I last was looking over four years ago.

I would post my resume for all to see, but there is some information in there I would rather not make public. But, if you are looking for a software engineer and are located in the Baltimore/DC area, just leave a comment or send me an email and I would be happy to send you a copy of it.

Back for more

Well, the happy couple has returned from the ocean a little tanner (and somewhat burned), but otherwise pretty happy. Things went very well, both at the wedding and on the honeymoon. I don't want to brag, but Jenn's winning streak in miniature golf is quite over. :)

More to come later as I wade through the massive pile of email waiting for me, and the pictures that were taken over the last week.

Stay tuned!

It's All Mine!

Today I pay my last car payment. Tomorrow I turn 25. In two months I get married. My car insurance payment is going drop like a stone. :)

French Smear Brit Dead

Grafitti in French Cemetery for British WWII Soldiers

SICK French yobs daubed a swastika and vile anti-war slurs at a cemetery for 11,000 British troops.

The showpiece cenotaph at the graveyard in Northern France was smeared in red paint with the words: "Dig up your rubbish. It's fouling our soil."

Other slogans at the Etaples cemetery near Boulogne included "Death to the Yankees" and "Saddam Hussein will win and spill your blood."

I've been trying very hard not to get political on my site. People who know me know where I stand, and that's enough for me (for now). I am currently biting my tongue very hard.

From Life Akimbo

Update: (2003-04-04 09:45)

Just to clarify my position here, I am not anti-French. I was actually in France a couple summers ago and it was an experience I will never forget (in a good way). What I am against, however, is the actions of some of the anti-war protesters. I fully support someone's right to express their opinion, whether I agree with it or not. But sometimes people can take things too far, way too far, as in this case here. A few idiots don't speak for an entire country, both in France and over here in the US.

Back In The Saddle Again

Starting two days ago, I am back in school again, taking CMSC 341: Data Structures for about the third time, I believe. Previous attempts were thwarted by life and work, but I think I have enough personal and professional support this time around to get through the rest of my degree. And besides, if I don't finish the class, I owe the company about $800-ish. :)

Jenn Got A Job!

Woo hoo!

My fiance, Jenn, just heard from the latest UR Call Center where she interviewed. She's been hired. Starts next Monday!

No more working nights. No more fluctuating paychecks. No more crappy health insurance. No more stress inducing critical patients.

She's still on cloud nine, and she got the offer over six hours ago. We're going to go celebrate in a little while; I'm treating her to dinner.

Everybody congratulate her! :)
